Biography

Raymond Henshaw was a master screen printer, curator, teacher and poet. His work aimed to quietly pose questions inviting the viewer to look beyond first impressions and delve deeper into topics. Including, the histories of the people portrayed, the value of literature in a digital age, and the relationship of text and images to form original narratives.

The majority of his work has particular interest in utilising the everyday object as a poetic metaphor. Infusing common objects with meaning and incorporating narratives with a social political leaning. Some of his photographic work and installations forge relationships around ideas of civility. As he was concerned with marking his own and others’ existence, these photographic works often contain portraits. Those portrayed are everyday people, part of the community at large that the artist met.

Narratives can be wrapped around histories both personal and national, looking at citizenship, ethnicity, belonging and morality. Other work focused on abstraction, using everyday packaging as a template to explore ideas about colour and form.

All his subject matter are explored across a variety of mediums, but can be chiefly seen in printmaking, installations, photography and the artist’s books. Examples of his work can be explored throughout this website.
